The National Universities Commission (NUC) at its Abuja headquarters at 3:48 p.m. on Friday, July 24, granted the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri the licence to operate a Catholic private university, marking a historic milestone for the Church in Owerri and the wider Imo community. This long‑awaited approval is the fruit of the visionary leadership and tireless commitment of His Grace, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, Metropolitan Archbishop of Owerri, whose sustained engagement with regulatory authorities and careful pastoral planning have now borne tangible fruit for Catholic tertiary education in the region.
In a symbolic gesture underscoring the unity of the local Church, the Auxiliary Bishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Moses Chikwe, represented Archbishop Ugorji at the formal reception of the licence in Abuja, leading the Archdiocesan team that travelled to witness this moment of grace and history. The new university, promoted by the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, is expected to integrate academic excellence with sound moral and spiritual formation, offering young people a holistic education rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition. Faithful in Owerri and beyond are invited to thank God for this breakthrough and to continue to pray for a smooth take‑off, adequate resourcing, and lasting impact on the Church, society, and the future of Nigerian youth.
