The Archdiocese of Owerri issued this press release to address false information circulating on social media regarding the alleged presence of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, former Governor of Kaduna State, at this year’s Archdiocesan Day/Odenigbo Lecture.
The Odenigbo Lecture is an annual event focused on promoting Igbo language and culture, with lectures delivered in Igbo by a guest of Igbo extraction from the previous year. This year’s lecture, held on 6th September, was given by Rev. Sr. Prof. Evangeline Oparaaocha from FUTO.
The release clarifies that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai was not invited, did not deliver any lecture, speech, or press conference at the event. Although Mr. Peter Obi, a regular guest, attended in previous years, he was not present this year.
The statement also describes an incident during the event where a group of placard-carrying protestors disrupted activities at Maria Assumpta Cathedral, chanting slogans against Mr. Obi and Mallam El-Rufai.
The Archdiocese condemns the actions of those who organized the protest, calls on the state government and security agencies to investigate and apprehend the sponsors of the disruption, and reaffirms Imo State’s reputation for hospitality and peace.
The release was signed by Rev. Fr. Patrick C. Mbarah, Archdiocesan Chancellor/Secretary.
