Praying to Overcome Addictions

Indecent behavioral attitudes and associated substance abuse among young people constitute a significant public health concern both globally and within Nigeria. Contrary to expectations of decline, the prevalence of these issues appears to be increasing, with adolescents in secondary and tertiary educational institutions increasingly exposed to and initiated into drug use. This trend has been linked to a concomitant rise in mental health disorders, elevated crime rates, and broader social instability, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive intervention strategies.

The situation requires immediate intervention by the government with the collaborative efforts of the state and the church. The church involvement resides on counseling and rehabilitation of affected individuals and proper sensitization among the growing youths to avoid addictions in all standards

“Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” …“I am willing. Be clean!”

Consider these steps to get rid of your addiction; it is not impossible. Our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, gives us sure hope and is ready to help and heal us from our addictions. Be it drug-related or behavioral addiction.

You need to seek support from a spiritual director who will not ask you for money but just spiritual guidance.

Consider accepting counseling and believing that you can be rehabilitated. Engage in a spiritual journey through personal reflection or desert experience. (alone with God).

Set clear goals for yourself and do it one at a time. Again, do not be harsh on yourself, but rather follow the instructions and guidance as given to you by your spiritual director. Work with one who can understand your temperaments. Prayer is always the key.

Help me to rely on You daily. When I feel weak, remind me that Your grace is sufficient. Guide my steps and keep me focused on the path to healing“.

“Lord, I come before You honestly and humbly. I acknowledge my struggle with addiction and my inability to overcome it on my own. I surrender this burden to You and ask for Your strength and guidance.”

Short Prayer

“Give me wisdom to make wise decisions and discernment to avoid harmful situations. Surround me with loving and supportive people who will encourage me.”

Transitus of St. Francis

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
