Observed by the Catholic Church, this feast shifts attention from the Last Supper to the ongoing mystery of Christ’s true presence in the consecrated bread and wine, which are believed to become the Body and Blood of Christ during the Eucharistic celebration. The occasion highlights gratitude for the Eucharist as spiritual nourishment and as a unifying bond among believers.

Usually held on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday or, in many regions, on the following Sunday, the celebration centres on the Eucharist with a solemn Mass, processions, and moments of adoration. In some local churches, the procession is moved to the last Sunday of the church year, while others who maintain the date move these processions through church aisles or outdoor paths, carrying the Eucharist in a monstrance, encouraging the faithful to reflect on and adore Christ present among them. Hymns, prayers of praise, and Scripture readings emphasise themes of thanksgiving, sacrifice, and unity.

The devotion encourages believers to meditate on the Paschal Mystery: Christ offered his body for the life of the world, sustaining the church’s mission.
