Calendar of Catholic Holidays in 2025

The Catholic Calendar, also known as the Liturgical Calendar, is a structured cycle that guides the worship and religious observances of the Catholic Church throughout the year. It highlights the significant events of Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, along with honouring saints and sacred mysteries of faith.

Advent:  Marks the beginning of the year, four weeks of preparation for Christmas.

Christmas: Celebrates the birth of Christ, lasting from December 25 to the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6). The Christmas season includes the Octave of Christmas, lasting eight days.

Other Seasons include:

Ordinary Time: Focuses on Jesus’ teachings and ministry, divided into two parts—one after Epiphany and another after Pentecost, emphasising the ongoing spiritual life.

Lent: A six-week time of penance, fasting, and prayer leading up to Easter.

Triduum: The three sacred days of Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday, commemorating Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection.

Days of Obligation

These are specific days in the Catholic Calendar when Catholics are required to attend Mass to commemorate significant liturgical events or saints. Examples include Christmas, the Solemnity of Mary (January 1), and the Feast of All Saints (November 1). Sundays are also considered days of obligation.

LSignificance

The calendar provides a rhythm for spiritual growth and reflection aligned with the life of Christ. It combines biblical history, theology, and tradition, providing a framework for worship, prayer, and community celebration. The ongoing cycle emphasises the divine mystery and the call for believers to participate actively in the Church’s spiritual life.

MESSAGE OF THE HOLY FATHER LEO XIV FOR LENT 2026. Theme: "Listening and Fasting: Lent as a Time of Conversion" Date: February 13, 2026 Introduction: A Time for Renewal Lent is a period where the Church invites us to center our lives on the mystery of God to renew our faith. This journey protects our hearts from being consumed by the anxieties and distractions of daily life. True conversion begins by welcoming the Word of God with a docile spirit, allowing it to transform us. It is an opportunity to heed the Lord’s voice and follow Christ on the road to Jerusalem toward his passion, death, and resurrection. The Importance of Listening. Listening is the primary way we demonstrate a desire for a relationship with others. Pope Leo XIV highlights that God himself is defined by listening, as seen when he heard the cry of his people in Egypt.
* A Call to Action. Listening to the Word in liturgy teaches us to listen to the "truth of reality". *Responding To Suffering: Scripture helps us recognize and respond to the cries of the anguished and the poor. *The Challenge: The condition of the poor is a "cry" that constantly challenges our societies, political systems, and the Church itself. Fasting: Preparing for the Word. Fasting is an ancient practice essential for conversion. By involving the body, it helps us identify our true "hungers" and orders our appetites toward justice rather than complacency. Click to read.
